Evaluation of Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) Program in Doda District of Jammu and Kashmir – DWCRA is a sub-scheme of IRDP. It was started in India in 1982-83 in 50 districts with the assistance of UNICEF. Doda was one of the 50 districts chosen for this scheme. Later on, it was taken up in all the districts of India. Impact of Employment Guarantee Scheme in Maharashtra on Disadvantaged Groups – Started in Maharashtra, this innovative scheme involved providing 100 days employment in drought-affected districts to at least one member of every needy family in the rural area. Marketing of Sal Seeds in Shankargarh Unit of Sarguja District, Madhya Pradesh (now Chattisgarh) – Sal, a minor forest produce in Madhya Pradesh and other States of India, is marketed by the Government through contractors on royalty payment on the basis of last three years’ production. The contracts are auctioned by the Government in a particular demarcated area. The study revealed that the labor involved in sal seed collection was heavily exploited by all concerned. They do not get even 50 per cent of the prescribed wage rate after working 10 hours a day.

Study of Availability of Fuel wood Sold as Head loads by Tribals in North Sarguja Forest Division of Sarguja District, Madhya Pradesh (now Chattisgarh) – An interesting study about fuel wood collection in North Sarguja Forest Division which reveals that the three modes of fuel collection include collection by individuals through head loads, through animal-drawn vehicles and through tractor-trailers. It was found that those who brought fuel by head loads, consumed the fuel most, while those who had to buy fuel, used it more sparingly. Fuel depots run by the forest department were of no help since the people bought only 0.5 per cent of their fuel requirement from the depots. Due to poverty and lack of purchasing power, people were reluctant to buy fuel and they preferred to collect it themselves and in case they had to buy, they bought fuel from head load carriers. Since people did not earn much through other activities, they tried to save money by bringing fuel wood to meet their needs and for sale.

Acculturation of the Child to Schooling: A Multi-ethnic Study – A study of children belonging to multi-racial, multi-religious communities in Madhupur sub-division of Deoghar district in Jharkhand. It deals with the acculturation of children from very poor families to schooling. Most of the children in the study were first generation learners. The schools chosen were non-formal that had a curriculum. The study used photography to explore the acculturation process thereby adding a vivid dimension and understanding to the behavior of children in one of the most educationally backward regions of India. The eagerness and innocence of the children, ready and waiting to learn, was infectious. The universality of child behavior, attitude and adaptability is what emerged from the study.

Water for a Better Life – It is a case study of accomplishments under the Environment Education and Action Program (EEAP) run by PIDT in collaboration with IFCOD. Under the program, 100 Haryali Samities (Green Committees) were formed in seven panchayat areas of Madhupur block of Deoghar district in Jharkhand. 1,668 villagers were trained.
